In US, Indian fast-food tries to enter mainstream

In US, Indian fast-food tries to enter mainstream: Tucked between a strip mall Starbucks and a Jamba Juice, at the back door of a Chipotle Grill, Bombay Bowl is one of a number of Indian restaurants whose owners are thinking big no matter how small they are. Borrowing the assembly-line format, customized service and chipper style of national chains like Subway, they plan to make dals, curries, chutneys and flatbreads into fast-food choices from coast to coast.

McDonald's Shamrock Available Nation Wide for the First Time

McDonald's Shamrock Shake To Spread Minty Green Rapture Nationwide For The First Time - The Consumerist: It's the first time Mickey D's has offered the artificially-hued and much beloved treat to every single one of its 14,000 U.S. locations, says CNNMoney. In the past, only selected stores carried the shake around St. Patrick's Day.

The ice cream treat debuted in 1970, and since then, McDonald's says the shamrock shake has stirred up a "cult-like" following who crave its icy goodness when the St. Patrick's Day season is nigh.

What you might not know is that it had its own mascot back in the day, named Uncle O'Grimacey, who of course, spoke like a stereotypical green Irish monster and extolled the virtues of all things green, including the shake.

McDonald's Will Stop Using Pink Goop Beef in Its Burgers

McDonald's Will Stop Using Pink Goop Beef in Its Burgers: Chef Jamie Oliver calls it pink slime. We feel it's more like pink goop. Either way, the ammonium hydroxide soaked pink crap beef is vomit inducing. Thankfully, you won't have to eat it anymore! Kind of. McDonald's has finally caved to the pressure and will ditch the use of the pink goop beef in its burgers.

The Best Way To Eat Breakfast at McDonald's | Serious Eats

The Best Way To Eat Breakfast at McDonald's | Serious Eats: What can I say? I actually like McDonald's breakfast sandwiches. I grew up above a McDonald's and my favorite mornings were the ones where we woke up too late to fix a proper breakfast at home so we'd grab a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit from the drive-thru on the way to school.

Zombie cheeseburger? McDonald’s patty, bun, cheese unchanged after one year sitting on kitchen counter

“Obviously it makes me wonder why we choose to eat food like this when even bacteria won’t eat it,” said Ms. Hesketh.

The meat patty has shrunk a bit, but it still looks edible and, with a faint but lingering greasy, leathery odour, she said it “still smells slightly like a burger . . . it hasn’t changed much.”

Fast Food’s Popularity Is Dropping, So They’re Dropping Their Prices | Blisstree

Fast Food’s Popularity Is Dropping, So They’re Dropping Their Prices | Blisstree: At a time when it seems like fast food would be the go-to for cash-strapped folks, Americans are surprisingly moving away from actual fast food. Both profits and popularity have slipped and been unable to recover since the economic downturn, which is making fast food chains nervous. So they’re going straight for the jugular, which is, in this case, the wallet. With extreme deals and ludicrously low prices, fast food manufacturers are attempting to reel consumers back in–particularly young people.

Chains like McDonald’s, Jack-in-the-Box, Burger King, and Wendy’s are trying to tempt customers with rock-bottom prices, as they extend their $1 menus and add more and more extras to their combination meals. And yet, it doesn’t seem to be working yet.

Italian artist transforms Ronald McDonald into the decapitated head of Medusa

Italian artist transforms Ronald McDonald into the decapitated head of Medusa: Oh, pop art. Lately we've seen Communist war memorials turned into superheroes and Batman and Superman channeling Michelangelo. Now Italian sculptor Giuseppe Veneziano has clownified Antonio Canova's 19th century sculpture Perseus and the Head of Medusa in Venice.

Why Won't McDonald's Give My Kid A Cup Of Water With Her Happy Meal? - The Consumerist

Why Won't McDonald's Give My Kid A Cup Of Water With Her Happy Meal? - The Consumerist: "Whenever I've tried suggesting a water with the meal, the cashier just flatly replies that they can't do this, because the order for a Happy Meal requires milk, chocolate milk, a fountain drink, or a juice box. When I asked if I could choose a soda and have them fill it with water instead (not asking for a discount, mind you, just asking for some water), they charged me for a medium soda...
When I called to complain to the manager, he immediately said the same thing, and then when I pointed out that I wasn't asking for a discount or something extra, that I simply wanted the cup filled with water instead of soda, he saw my point. I asked him to educate his cashiers, but sadly, I don't think that's going to work."

BK Attacks Japan With Mini Spam Burgers For Women

BK Attacks Japan With Mini Spam Burgers For Women - The Consumerist: "Swinging the pendulum away from their 'Meat Monsters' offering, Burger King is dropping slider-style BK Bites on Japan in a variety of meat patties. Besides the usual beef, you can get a chicken patty or a Spam patty. That's right, delicious Spam. And it's for the ladies. 'What Women Want, Women Get,' is the tagline for the Spam and BLT mini combo, which the chain describes as 'lighter' and 'suitable for women.'"

Dunkin Donuts Mountain Dew Coolatta

Two of the world’s “coolest” beverages have come together to keep people energized no matter how high temperatures may rise. Dunkin’ Donuts, America’s favorite all-day, everyday stop for coffee and baked goods, and PepsiCo have partnered to introduce the new Mountain Dew™ Coolatta® at Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants.  A delicious, frozen slush beverage that combines the popular lemon and lime citrus flavors of Mountain Dew and the cool refreshment of a Dunkin’ Donuts Coolatta, Mountain Dew Coolattas are now available for a limited time at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide for the suggested retail price of $2.29 for a small, 16-ounce beverage.

To celebrate the launch, Dunkin’ Donuts is giving people the chance to participate in the brand’s new “UnFreeze It” online promotion, a unique experience offering the chance to win daily prizes by using your computer to “unfreeze” a Mountain Dew Coolatta cup from a real block of ice using an Ice Blaster. Beginning today, those who visit www.DunkinDonuts.com/Dew and complete an online entry form will be entered for a chance to be randomly selected to play the game and control an actual working Ice Blaster, aimed at a real block of ice with a Mountain Dew Coolatta cup frozen inside. You’ll also be entered for the chance to win the daily sweepstakes prize packs, as well as the Grand Prize drawing of a 32” 3D TV.  Participants selected will pre-program three shots at the ice and can watch a live video stream to see if their blasts unfreeze the cup. The participant each day to unfreeze the cup wins a prize, such as a skateboard, surfboard, mountain bike or skate deck. Each day through May 29 a fresh block of ice will be set up and new participants will have the chance to take their best shots.  Please visit www.DunkinDonuts.com/Dew for official rules.

Subway Tops McDonald's To Become Largest Fast-Food Chain

Subway Tops McDonald's To Become Largest Fast-Food Chain - The Consumerist: "Subway's Jared may boast about how fit he is, but in the battle of the corporate mascots, he's now much bigger than arch-rival Ronald McDonald. Subway is now the world's largest fast-food chain, with 33,749 restaurants. McDonald's trails by over a thousand, with 32,737 restaurants worldwide.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Subway's growth comes from a strategy that includes aggressive expansion into overseas markets, along with non-traditional locations, such as auto showrooms and churches."

Is Ronald McDonald Getting Phased Out?

Photo: Ben Hider / Getty Images

Is Ronald McDonald Getting Phased Out? - Slashfood: "It's the fate of celebrity icons everywhere: One minute you're adored by legions and the next thing you know, you've somehow drifted into middle age and the tepid waters of cultural obscurity.

It's downright tough these days to be clown in the fast-food biz. Just ask Ronald McDonald. As Bloomberg reports, the 48-year-old face of all that's supposedly happy in Happy Meals is finding it harder to land work these days.

Blame it on the changing times. McDonald's is undergoing a dramatic re-branding of sorts, launching its uber-popular line of Starbucks-style coffees under the McCafe label and committing upwards of $1 billion to renovate hundreds of restaurants to make them look less like one big Playland and more like...well, again, Starbucks. And it appears that Ronald doesn't exactly fit in with the aesthetic of the latte-sipping, iPad-toting crowd."

KFC Customer Gets Money Bag Instead Of Drive-Thru Order

KFC Customer Gets Money Bag Instead Of Drive-Thru Order - The Consumerist: "All those morons sitting in jail right now because they got caught trying to rob a fast food joint are going to feel silly when they hear about the guy in Kansas who drove off with a bag full of KFC's cash when all he wanted was some fried chicken.

Apparently, one KFC employee put the cash for a bank deposit into a bag, which was then accidentally grabbed by another worker and given to the 21-year-old customer.

It wasn't until the man got back to his house that he noticed he'd gotten the wrong order."
